I have installed Oracle Developer 6i in Windows XP and Windows 7 64 bit machines and have been running this software for quite a long time and have also installed Developer 6i on client's machines using Windows XP.
One suggestion I would like to give you is that, after downloading you go for custom installation. Try to avoid them to get it installed hassle-free. You must stop all the relevant services before installation This is for users who have any Oracle version already installed and the services are up and running.
If somehow your installation is aborted you can start again if any problem pops up, you can clean out the registry using the Regedit command and select for Oracle keyword in the registry and deleting them or select a different home and path for installation. The intent is that they can save precious time and effort in searching for the same so trying my level best to reach out to as many people as I can.
