Ebel watch serial

From what I've been able to find out, the logo on the face of the watch is Ebel's "old" logo. I know this was revived on some th anniversary watches, so I'm not sure if this watch is an early watch or a new "retro" watch from that anniversary period. In the middle of the case back, in the military block stencil type font, it reads J.

Here is some information from the inside of the case back, not shown in photos: There is a symbol of a rabbit. Ebel Watch Co. It is silver colored in reality. Military or just Military style? Older or newer? Looking forward to hearing from some experts on this one. Thanks greatly! Aug 27, 14, 69 48 Calgary, Alberta Country Region. The engraving on the case back appears to have been done by machine, not by hand. Hand-engraving is an art, and no self respecting hand-engraver would make a mistake like that.

I suspect the engraving was done long after the watch was made. As to the style of the watch? I suspect the watch is likely from the late s or early s. The style of your watch was popular during that era, on watches for civilian use as well as military use.

However, the engraving appears to refer to a regimental number and a military person's name. But that is a guess. So I suspect your watch is no newer than mid s.

I suspect that ownership of the Ebel name might have changed over the years. If so, I doubt that the current owners of the name would be interested in re-introducing that model as a retro version.

Their target market today is different to what the target market might have been 60 years ago. And the AS hasn't been made for probably 60 years or so.

Doug, I can't thank you enough for your input. You're right about it being a guess as to whether it was actually issued as a military watch or not, but the name, serial number and manner of engraving seem to point in that direction, logically.

I doubt VERY much that this watch would have been military issue. Most certainly, karat gold cases would NOT be used on a watch that was issued to military. If such a watch were to have been owned by someone in the armed forces, it might have either been presented by family, a previous employer, or purchased by the original owner.

Had it been military issue, the information on the back would have included the branch of military service, and a part or model number. Unless, of course, it was a presentation by a company, a family, or a purchase by the owner. I will say that I suspect the watch already had many miles on it when the engraving was added. The exposure of your watch to strong magnetic fields will affect its time keeping and may cause it to stop. A quartz watch will resume working with original accuracy when it is removed from the magnetic field. A mechanical watch may require demagnetization. A watch may be made of a scratch-resistant material; however no material is truly scratch-proof. Therefore, please follow these steps when handling your watch:. Clean your watch regularly by wiping it with a soft cloth dampened with fresh water, especially after exposure to seawater.

To maintain water resistance, yearly maintenance is required. The gaskets and crown which seal the case are subject to wear and deterioration under normal use.

These parts should be inspected and replaced as needed each time the watch is opened for service, including battery changes.

Information on cleaning and caring for Movado watch straps is offered below. While the life span of a watch strap depends on your care and wearing habits, as well as the climate in which you live, proper care will extend its life.

Leather straps should be kept dry. Exposure to water may cause a leather watch strap to become brittle and eventually break. To preserve the finish of the leather, contact with perfumes should be avoided. Following exposure to chlorinated or salt water, gently damp wipe your leather strap with fresh water, and air dry.

Contact with acetone and ethyl alcohol should be avoided. Wipe soiled area with a soft wet cloth, then dampen a cotton ball or soft clean white cloth with the cleansing solution, and rub soiled area gently.

Repeat 2 to 3 times until stain disappears. Please test for color fastness on inside surface before applying any solution.

Most watches are water-resistant. A water-resistant watch has gaskets which together with the crown and crystal help seal the case against average water pressure at a stated pressure or depth. A watch that is water resistant to 3ATM, for example, is built to withstand the average pressure 3 atmospheres occurring at 99 feet or 30 meters below the ocean's surface.

All Movado watches are tested to meet international standards for water resistance. However, unless the watch is labeled as a diver's watch, we do not recommend swimming with it. Watch seals are generally designed to withstand only casual contact with water, such as splashes of water and rain.

We also do not recommend you shower, enter steam rooms, or bathe while wearing your watch. Many agents, including steam, soap, mildew, salt water, perfume and chlorine can get into the watch, and if not cleaned immediately, the gaskets and seals can break down over time, allowing dust or moisture to penetrate the case and potentially damage the moving components of your watch.

Even a small particle of dust is enough to stop the watch. Dust can enter a watch if the case, crystal or crown is not intact. A loose, chipped or cracked crystal should be replaced immediately to prevent this from occurring. If you do not wear your watch for a long period, store it in its original box, in a dry place.

Mechanical watches with automatic movements have a spring that is wound by the normal, daily motion of the wearer's arm. The arm movement causes a rotor inside the watch to transmit motion energy to the barrel, thus winding the mainspring. An important feature of every automatic watch is its "power reserve" — the amount of time it can remain idle before the mainspring uncoils and the movement runs out of power.

If the power reserve is exhausted because the watch has not been worn for an extended period of time, you can wind the movement by hand approximately 20 turns of the crown to create an initial power reserve — but to maintain the power reserve, the watch must be worn continuously and actively. If you plan on wearing your watch daily, you may want to manually wind it once every two weeks to keep the wheels in motion and the oil from drying out. If you do not plan on wearing it daily, we advise you to wind the watch about three times a week to ensure continuous operation.

Finally, if you do not wear your automatic watch daily, you may want to use a winding box. This box mimics the natural motion of your arm to keep your automatic watch running.

In contrast, a watch with a "manual" mechanical movement must be hand-wound daily by turning the crown to ensure its continuous operation — and if it stops, it must be wound by hand. No, the movement of your quartz watch is powered by a battery. If your watch is losing time, the battery may need to be replaced or the movement itself may need service. In addition to exposing the movement to dust and moisture, which can cause it to malfunction, pulling out the stem will not prolong battery life.

Pulling the stem out simply disengages the hands from the movement; the movement continues to run and the battery's power is still being depleted.
