In Display settings, click on the rectangle representing the monitor that you want to designate the primary monitor in Display settings. Windows will highlight the box representing the selected monitor. If there is a greyed-out checkbox already there, it means that the monitor you selected is already the primary monitor. So this weekend I installed the final x64 Windows 7 and ran into this issue, which I did not have before. Here's my setup:. Despite there being an option to choose which monitor is the primary one in the Display Settings, it has always been grayed out for me. On your laptop: Under Display Settings make sure the external is attached and working as the second monitor the laptop LCD should be primary.
